Defending Abortion Rights and Women’s Healthcare

Women’s rights are human rights. This has been a core value of mine since I first entered politics. In the 1970’s, as Roe was being debated and our country was at a crossroads, I supported a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion. But now, that right is under existential threat. Let me be clear: abortion is healthcare, and the decision to have one should be between a woman and her doctor.

Beyond morality, banning abortion will harm our most vulnerable citizens. Striking down a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion disproportionately impacts people of color and lower-income communities. Research shows that when abortion is banned, working class families are significantly more likely to live below the poverty line. Banning abortion doesn’t outlaw abortion – it outlaws safe and legal abortion, placing women’s health at risk in the process.

We need legislators in Congress to speak up for a women’s right to a safe and legal abortion, unflinchingly and without fear. This is something I have been doing for over 40 years. While New York has codified a woman’s right to abortion, we need to do the same at the federal level.

In Congress, I will:

  • Push my Congressional colleagues to honor their constituents’ wishes and codify Roe v. Wade into law
  • Advocate for the removal of other unjust women’s health practices, precedents, and laws, such as Buck v. Bell, which allows the government to forcibly sterilize women
  • Fight to repeal the Hyde and Helms Amendments that prevent government aid from being used for abortions and other women’s reproductive health services
  • Advocate for bans on Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) laws that aim to punish doctors who provide legalized abortion services and restrict people’s access to safe clinics nationwide
  • Oppose efforts to eliminate or reduce Title X family planning funding and support effort to increase funding for such projects, as well as support funding for Medicare, Planned Parenthood, and other agencies that protect and provide women’s health services, including the right to an abortion
  • Push the U.S. to be a global leader on women’s health and the right to a safe and legal abortion, by opposing any reinstatement of the Mexico City Policy or “Global Gag Rule,” and supporting efforts to include family planning services in U.S. global programs to improve health, empower women economically, and advance gender equality as well as oppose efforts to limit access to reproductive healthcare throughout U.S. foreign assistance programs.
